Female vocal trio Sabela Sisters brings to the stage a musical energy as culturally rich as their backgrounds are diverse. Busisiwe Ngejane, Bukelwa Velem and Jacobi de Villiers met while touring with the Cape Town Opera Company – their shared love for opera and performing brought them together to form the Sabela Sisters. “Sabela” is Xhosa for “to respond to a call” – in their case case the call for a blending of cultural heritages to bring a unique contemporary opera experience to audiences.
Sabela Sisters’ colourful repertoire is a melting pot of well-known opera and contemporary compositions, including operatic favourites such as Lakme and Bella Nuit. Also featuring are traditional South African songs such as Pata Pata and Blouberg se Strand. The interpretation of beloved opera and South African songs by these three young South African women promises to be an experience that is both deeply meaningful and greatly entertaining to audiences.
“Sabela Sisters is more than just a music duo. They are friends, and call themselves sisters. They sing together; opera, classical and contemporary pieces and both of them form part of Cape Town Opera.
We drove around Kayamandi and through Stellenbosch; trying to capture the colors of their voices in the colours of our surroundings.
We had fun. “
