Sabela Sisters is an exciting new musical partnership, bringing together the elegance and beauty of the best opera duets with the passion of traditional South African vocal favourites. Buki Velem and Jacobi de Villiers formed Sabela Sisters after singing together for many years with Cape Town Opera’s Voice of the Nation Ensemble. Aimed primarily at corporate events, Sabela Sisters offers well known and much-loved duets such as Délibes Lakmé and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, as well as energetic performances of local compositions such as Miriam Makeba’s The Click Song and Johannes Kerkorrel’s Halala Afrika.
Just back from Durban Playhouse Theatre – we had a great run and premier there of Mandela Trilogy! Was amazing to perform and see the feedback. One really feels like you are walking in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela…and at some moments you are totally overwhelmed by the music and the man. We are so blessed to be part of this amazing production…this will be the beginning of many years to come, we believe!
Our Debut concert was a majour success. We had the greatest night of our Sabela Sisters existence so far! What an incredible priviledge and pleasure to sing for so many people! We had a blast! It was just such a beautiful night – made possible in so many ways by so many wonderful people! Thank you Kobus and Zelda Esterhuysen – for your amazing home in which we could perform. Marco Santorini – for your preparation of Italian cuisine! Niel Oosthuizen – for arranging us some lovely wine for the evening and last but not least – Albert Horne, the best chorus master in the world.
Things are really coming together for our debut performance on 21 July (next week!). We’ve had some awesome help from so many people..the venue is great, a spot with just the right balance of intimacy and elegance. Earlier this week we had a quick recording session so that we can hand out samples from our repertoire after the concert. It’s going to be a great evening, we can’t wait!
Buki’s got a new haircut, what do you think? Our own Skunk Anansi…anything for an opportunity to take a photo, especially if you walk upon a victorian bath in the middle of nowhere and in front of Table Mountain!
In June we finally completed our first photoshoot. A bit worried about the winter rains, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. We spent some time in Kayamandi and spots in and around Stellenbosch like Jonkershoek and Nook. We want to say a big thanks to Adriana Roos for the artistic, beautiful pics!
In 2010 we had the incredible opportunity to tour to Paris with Cape Town Opera’s production of Showboat. We performed in the Chatelet Theatre, a truly amazing venue! It’s not every day that you get to stare out the window of your dressing room and see the Eiffel Tower…
Paris is definitely our favourite city. The parisian crowds were wonderfully supportive and welcoming. We can’t wait to get back!
We are already beginning to rehearse for our upcoming networking concert – Sabela Sisters’ first official performance. Exciting stuff. Only room for thirty guests, so make sure you’re on the list!
The final date has not been set, but it will most likely be in the first week of July.
Well, here we are! The dream is coming alive. It’s great to see our plans for a unique vocal offering coming together. Rehearsals are coming along nicely and plans for our photo shoot and demo recording are also well underway.
